Hops are, by nature, climbing plants. They need to be trained to grow up strings or wires which support the plants and allow them significantly greater sunlight exposure as well as growth than if they were left to grow along the ground. Male and female flowers of the hop plant develop on separate plants; it is important to note that only the female plants are grown in hop fields to prevent pollination and preserve the integrity of the hop for brewing and other uses.
Hops are used primarily as a flavoring and stability agent in beer, although they are also used for various purposes in other beverages, medicines, personal care products, and more. Many different types of hops are grown around the world, with different types being used for particular styles of beer. They are dried before they can be used in the brewing process; something that must be done carefully and precisely to ensure that the hops retain their flavor and structure.
For years, we have contracted directly to brokers in the hop industry and still do so today. But the marketplace is getting leaner and we are continually looking to unique places for distribution of our hops.
Quality is our most important factor.
We have incorporated rigid guidelines as growers that we must adhere to. We stand behind our product. The variety you order is the variety we have grown, harvested, and shipped directly from the farm to you. It is a continual matter of pride, viewing our hop fields and knowing we are giving you our very best.
As hop farmers, we are able to provide hops that are handled with care and dried at the precise temperatures. Our hops are kept in cold storage year-round both on the farm and in the warehouse. The Puterbaugh Farm stencil on your bale is our guarantee that you are receiving our highest quality hops.
